It is already 2 years in a row since I have been attending this Peony Festival and judged Peony Show in Oshawa located in the Greater Toronto Area, Canada. It is an annual event and this year in June will be already its 13th anniversary. I am planning to see this amazing show and festival again this year. Along the article you can see many of my pictures from this even taken last year in June 2016.
The Peony show and Festival in Oshawa is organized by the City of Oshawa, Peony Society Ontario Region and Matsuyama Bonsai Society. This is free event located at the Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens and presents one of the Canada’s largest contemporary peony collections.
This year Peony Festival and Show will take place June 10 and 11th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There will be 300 types of peonies in the gardens displayed in the Peony Garden, which is part of Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens and 100 more peonies will be presented inside adjacent Children’s Area (155 Arena Street, Oshawa), where there will be held judged Peony Show and awards will be given to the best looking peonies and their growers.
Various artisans also participate in this festival presenting their art, craft and other items for sale in the booths places beside Peony Garden. When I was there 2 years ago, some artisans were also selling peonies. Concerts of live music are also organized and inside the Children Area you will be able to admire some of the most beautiful and original looking peonies on display, as well as Bonsai Show.
Gardening seminars will also be organized this year, and even art a photo contest. I will consider participating. Last year when I was there my favorite local nursery Vandermeer was also presenting some of their plants in the hallway of the Children’s Area building and have them available for sale. It is certainly a great even to attend if you like flowers and particularly peonies, or you you are just looking for a good time to get outdoors, enjoy nature’s beauty, listen to some music and socialize. If you have children, they could certainly also enjoy very much this so colourful and lively event.
Have a look at my pictures below for a better idea about this Peony Festival and show. I took them during these events in 2016. I was amazed by the beauty, number and varieties of peonies blooming in Peony Garden and on display in the Children’s Area. Many of them looked quite unique and very original. Most of the peonies in the Peony Garden were in full bloom, some were just opening their flowers. The peonies were in various colours from white to dark maroon or purple and some have variegated colours in more than one shade.
The petals of peonies were quite smooth and rounded or had raffled edges. Many peonies looked very full with many petals, others have more simple, but nevertheless still looking great design displaying their yellow centers more prominently. As with roses, some peonies have strong, beautiful smell, other had more subtle or no aroma at all. Also like with roses, many of them looked quite similar, but they were still a different variety, which experts can distinguish.
I loved this maroon looking Mary Brand’s peonies. I like very much the colours of their flowers and full looking blooms. To me they looked quite similar to some other peony varieties like for example Red Charm, which I have purchased last year somewhere else and am now growing in my garden. I hope it will bloom for us this year.
Here is another kind of peony and this beautiful pink variety is called “Bev. They have much lower number of petals than Mary Brand, and more open design prominently displaying their center.
Here is another style of pink peony – “Nice Gal”.
The peony Mons. Martin Cahuzac looked quite striking as well, as you can see below.
Many people were attending the show enjoining the flowers, sunshine, fresh air, music and socializing.
The peach colour of this Lorelei peony was quite unique since most of the peonies growing in the Peony Garden were in various shades of pink, red, maroon, white, or variegated colours. I was able to see more of peach and similar colours peonies inside the Children’s Area when I was admiring cut peonies displayed there during for the judged Peony Show.
I liked very much the variegated colours of this “Candy Stripe” peony. I would like to get one of them for my garden.
I also loved this Chocolate Soldier peonies. I liked how the tones of colour were gradually changing from strong pink to light cream and white. The flowers looked very full and their pretty big heads were held high. I also hope get some of them for my garden soon. I didn’t see them yet anywhere offered for sale in our local nurseries, but perhaps I will find them there this year, or maybe will be able to purchase them from other local peony growers. If you know when I can buy them in GTA area, please let me know.
Another picture of this amazing flowers where you can fully appreciate the shape of their flowers.
Here is another beautiful peony and I am not sure what was its name since the tag didn’t photograph clearly enough. It was a bit hard to take pictures there because of a low light. This peony was on display inside the Children’s Arena and participating in the judged Peony Show.
Another peony which was participating in the judged Peony Show and this one had a pretty original, more orange looking colour, but probably not as strong as it looks now since the light was making things more yellow.
After admiring many peonies participating in the judged Peony Show inside the Children’s Arena, as well as looking at the peony show and listening to some live music there, I went back to the Peony Garden to see more peonies there.
It was really a very lively and interesting event and I have greatly enjoyed it and plan to return to see it this year.
